COVID-19: The Galaxy’s Greatest Heroes
Inspiration:
This assignment was one of the most exciting that I’ve ever had. I love the idea of creating content relevant to our day to day lives as opposed to random assignments that might not ring with as much truth or meaning. When first thinking about how I would address this concept, I knew I wanted to have a chance to honor the men and women who have been so bravely serving us in these uncertain times, but to also give them a chance to shine as the heroes they are. Then I thought to myself about how I personally pictured heroes, and immediately my mind went to movies within the Marvel, DC, and Star Wars franchises that I had grown up idolizing, and I wanted to find a way to portray the heroes of today, nurses, doctors, first responders, and other essential workers, in the same light so that they could be given the same respect and admiration they deserve.
I took most of my inspiration for my poster from vintage movie posters from the original Star Wars trilogy among other movie posters, and mimicked the triangular layout of the first responders I chose as my “characters,” allowing for the nurse figure to take the most prominent place at the top as the largest of them, and then moving down throughout many of the other important people and jobs during the pandemic. Pictured, are nurses, doctors, farmers, coronavirus testers, police, firefighters, postal workers, and grocery store employees with a faded coronavirus molecule in the back to almost look like the moon and stars around it. That’s not to say that there aren’t other jobs that are EXTREMELY important right now, but these were some of the ones that particularly stood out to me. Finally, I added a boarder around the edges and gave it the title “COVID-19: The Galaxy’s Greatest Heroes” to give it that final movie-like touch.
Sketch work for the different figures.
